Breathe better, Live better!

How Chiropractic Care and Oromyofunctional therapy can enhance your overall health!

When we think about health we often focus on symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, poor sleep, or fatigue. But what if many of these concerns were connected by something deeper? Increasingly research and clinical experience are highlighting the role of Oromyofunctional Disorders (OMD's) in overall health and wellbeing.

Oromyofunctional disorders involve dysfunction in the muscles of the face, tongue, and mouth. These muscles play a vital role in essential functions such as breathing, swallowing, speaking and even maintaining proper posture. When these patterns are altered through mouth breathing, low tongue posture or tongue thrust—it can have huge impacts on the body.

One of the most significant impacts of OMD's is on breathing. Ideally we should breathe through our nose with the tongue gently suctioned to the roof of the mouth. However, many individuals develop mouth breathing habits often linked to poor muscle function or airway restriction. Over time, this can contribute to disrupted sleep, reduced oxygen efficiency, snoring and even fatigue during the day.

There are connections between orofacial function and posture. Poor tongue posture and airway compromise can encourage a forward head position, placing strain on the neck and upper back. This postural adaptation can lead to tension, discomfort and reduced mobility issues that can be seen in both adults and children.

Taking a collaborative approach to care becomes incredibly powerful. An Oromyofunctional Therapist will assess individuals and will aim to retrain the muscles of the face and mouth through specific targeted exercises. These exercises help restore proper tongue posture, encourage nasal breathing and improve swallowing patterns. Over time, this can lead to improved breathing efficiency, better sleep quality, and enhanced muscle coordination. An OMT will also refer on to relevant specialists such as a Functional Dentist or ENT if they believe this is required.

Chiropractic care complements this process by addressing the structural and neurological aspects of the body. The neck, upper back, cranial system and TMJ plays a crucial role in posture, movement, and nervous system function. When there are imbalances in these areas it can reinforce poor breathing patterns and muscle dysfunction.

By improving spinal alignment and reducing tension in the surrounding muscles Chiropractic care helps create an environment where the body can function more efficiently. Patients often notice improvements in posture, reduced neck and jaw tension and greater ease of movement. Importantly, these changes support the work being done by the OMT making it easier for new and healthier patterns to be reinforced.

For many people, the changes can be profound. Better sleep can lead to improved energy and focus. Efficient breathing supports physical performance and recovery. Improved posture reduces strain and discomfort throughout the body. And perhaps most importantly, these changes are sustainable because they are built on restoring functional patterns.

Health is much more than being free from pain, it’s about how well your body functions, adapts, and supports you in everyday life. By addressing this we move beyond short-term relief and focus on restoring the way your body is designed to work. The result is a more balanced system supporting better breathing, improved movement and a greater sense of ease in your day to day life.
